The 14 steps it takes to open my office door with a new phone
I recently got a new phone after my last phone was kinda destroyed…and realized to get into my office I would need to download an app to get in. There’s no physical keys given out, so I gotta do a few things.
Simple enough but first I’d have to…
- Download the app
- Sign in to the app, the app only has magic links, no password, so gotta go to a browser and sign into my email
- My email requires a username and password that I don’t actually know, it’s stored in a password manager that syncs between devices
- Download password manager
- Open up another device to sync the passwords
- Log into email, but before that , the email needs a two-factor authentication with an OTP generated in google authenticator
- Download authenticator and get the new OTP
- Finally log in to my email, find the email, now the door can be unlocked
- Unlock the door…
But wait…it’s a new phone, and there’s no wifi near the building, so I also need to:
- Log into my cellphone provider, again, needs an OTP, but this time to my email, fortunately I already have logged into that
- Get OTP from email, actually login
- Swap my cell number to a new device, (un)fortunately I did not set up device protection, so I actually could transfer the phone number really easily, just a click of a button, nothing else
- Activate the device and wait for cell reception
- …actually unlock the door
It’s honestly funny that I had to do all those steps to unlock the front door, if only they just gave me a physical key, I would've been at work on time!
Its good I didn't need to urgently open it :))
